How good is the Asus Eee 4GB?

Well I was browsing for a portable laptop and found the Asus Eee 4 GB. I'm impressed by its price ($400), incredibly small size, and its web cam. But I do have some questions. Does it have a CD drive? If not, can I buy one for it? What about its software? What exactly does it come with? What software can I install on it (games, etc.)? Does it need an antivirus? Would you reccommend it? Some first hand answers would be greatly welcomed. Thanks a lot!

ASUS Eee PC doesn't come with a CD drive. However, there are three USB ports available, and you can attach external CD drive (type "External USB CD Drive" in a search engine).

The ASUS Eee PC comes with Xandros, a Linux distribution based on Debian: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xandros

There is also a version that comes with Microsoft Windows XP.

There are around 40 pre-installed software applications including OpenOffice.org office suite (except Draw), Mozilla Firefox, Skype, Tux Paint, E-mail, and Internet radio applications. You can install many other Linux/Windows applications, depending on the OS you choose.

The Linux version doesn't need an antivirus -- viruses on Linux are an extremely rare occurence. The Windows version might require antivirus, depending on what you do with your machine.

I'd recommend it if you're a student or a user who wants a inexpensive mobile computer for Internet surfing, emailing, chatting, listening to songs, playing simple games, creating documents/spreadsheets/presentations, editing pictures etc.

However, it's not great for things like playing games that require huge RAM, heavy duty video editing etc. Also, its storage capacity is small -- only 4 GB (some of which is already occupied by the OS). However, you can always attach an external storage device through the USB ports.

If you're looking for an inexpensive mobile computer device, go for it. Otherwise, it'd be better to buy an entry-level desktop machine -- it'd only cost a few more bucks, and will be upgradable.
