Internet security?

I am buying a new laptop with windows vista, and 2 gigs of memory. With that in mind I need to know of a good antivirus. I have heard of Norton, and McAffe, but I also heard they slow down you computer. I dont want a free software, (I used a free software on my old computer and got a virus....).

So I suppose what I want is a good antivirus to protect myself on the internet, that wont slow down my computer, and will be with a $60 maximum cost.

Please provide names and links if possible. Thanks and the most informative answer will get the best answer.

You are going to need 2 things and I will give you the best:

1. Kaspersky anti-virus:

and secondly, a really good anti-spyware.

You could choose one of the following:

CounterSpy: http://www.sunbelt-software.com/

or Spysweeper: http://www.webroot.com/consumer/products...

Norton and Mcafee are the only reliable ones I know of that aren't "freeware".

Yes they do slow down your computer (because things constantly run in the background to ensure that you're protected), but would you rather sacrifice a little speed or risk geting a virus?

P.S. Microsoft also has a new program (Windows Live Onecare). I'm not sure about it's performance, but it is about $30 (I think), and you can download a free 90 day trial at microsoft.com.
You may want to consider getting an internet security suite. This will house both antivirus/antispyware products with the addition of other safety programs.

By using a security suite, you cut down on the amount of conflict that can occur when you are using multiple software.

Hope this helps!

I am currently using Trend Micro PC-cillin. It came with my Dell and others have highly recommended it. Best Buy sells it.
