Why does a computer keep hanging everytime it is booted up?

My aunt's computer has this problem - she claims that everytime she switches on her computer, it hangs up, and every folder and file refuses to open. She speculates that this could be because her Norton AntiVirus Virus definitions expired, and that, failing to get a new one, she tried to install (incompletely) a new anti-virus software (AVG, (sp?)), incompletely mainly because the computer kaputs on her ever since then. She and I would like to know what is the main problem, and whether there is any solution. Thanks!

it is not because norton anti virus expired. No trial or subscription software should cause your computer to mess up just because it expired. That would be ethically wrong and probably would result in law suits against the companies. My Norton has expired for a few months and all I get is a nag to renew the subscription every couple of weeks.

Your aunt's computer seems to have a serious problem, it could be a number of things such as registry or missing crucial files. It is amazing what people who know little what they are doing can do to a computer should they get into stuff they shouldn't mess with. Maybe she should try these few methods:

Use system restore and take her computer back to a date when she knew it worked fine

In safe mode use an anti-spyware program
