Does a portable HDD require its own protection if accessing internet from its own browser or does PC

I am helping a friend with some minor computer problems and have loaded some helpful software on a portable HDD with a usb connection. For additional security I also have Firefox browser on the portable HDD so I can access the internet if needed straight from the portable HDD. My friend is a complete novice so does not as yet have much on his PC except a version of Win XP Pro and an Antivirus package and firewall. I am not sure if my portable HDD will be protected by his PC's security if I go on the intenet, or if it would be better to have my on security an the portable HDD as well?

Any program that directly connects to the internet should have its own virus protection, since you can't rely on someone else properly updating their PC. Clamwin is a free antivirus program you can use as a portable application.

I am not sure that a package for protecting HDD's against viruses exists but if it does it is always best to use it for added security. As far as virus protection from the pc goes it should provide adequate protection to the pc itself, preventing viruses from spreading or even getting onto the system, hence forth stopping viruses from getting onto the hdd. Hope this helps.
i think it's usually sufficient if the pc has an anti virus.
