How do I get rid of stop error messages?

I get a blue screen saying this:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check to make sure new hardware or software has been installed correctly

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select Safe Mode. I am pretty sure it's a virus, I had that malware windows xp antivirus get on my computer a few weeks ago. I got rid of the initial program, but I know it's not fully gone. I have tried antivirus things, but I try them, and my computer gives me the error screen. same with the online scanners. either fire fox or internet explorer have to close, I need help, bad!

This particular error usually has two possible causes, those being: faulty memory modules or a failing hard disk.

Press "Windows key+R" to bring up the Run command, and type 'CMD' and then enter.

In the resulting command prompt type; 'chkdsk /r' and then answer YES to its resulting question.

Now restart your system and let to run through its hard drive check and watch for any errors. If you do recive error messages, i suggest replacing your hard disk.
