Why does my family鈥檚 brand new laptop runs so slow?

It鈥檚 a brand new Acer laptop. I don鈥檛 know the model number, but it has blue tooth technology and is probably very up to date. It has 512 Megs of memory, Norton antivirus and an external broadband modem. It is so new that there are hardly any data files in it!

The problem: When using the Internet, it takes a long time to log on 鈥?and it takes forever for a page to load! This always happens, so it cannot be a matter of luck.

My old PC runs on a P4 Celeron 1.9 Gig chip, has 1 Gig of memory, it runs on Windows 98 SE, has an broadband modem and it has tons of music software and files in it. My old PC is much, much faster than the brand new laptop!

Your assessment on the slow laptop would be appreciated.

There are 5 variables you have to consider:

1) Memory

2) Broadband service

3) Anti-Virus and Firewall services

4) Processor speed

5) Network adapter connection type

Assuming you have multiple computers in your home, have no one surf and run a speed test to see what your speed is like. I assume you are not running wirelessly and that you are hardwiring?

If you are running wirelessly, depending on 802.11x protocol (a 55Mbps, b 11Mbps, g 55Mbps, and n ~100Mbps), your wireless throughput is always slower than your hardwire (Max 10/100/1000 Mbps 1000Mbps would apply to Gigabit card)
